Also by comparison, the median income of those age 18 and over who completed their education with a high school credential (including a General Educational Development certificate, or GED) was $20,431.
Dropouts rates lately have been increasing, students just dont see the importance in going to school and making something out of themselves. Mostly its offered by the S.C. Department of Education, many people take the opportunity to gain what they lost in their past. Adult Ed graduates 200-250 students a year, they made the Adult Ed schedule is designed to accommodate students with jobs and other obligations.
People who get a second chance to improve themselves take it very seriously and try very hard not to mess up like they did the first time. For example: research found that one student in particular stated that he lost all interest in school and decided to join a gang and all he would do was hang out with his friends and do drugs just because he thought it was easier.
Some study shows that about 90 percent of students have used alcohol as a excuse to miss school, and their use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs can be influential in their decistion to leave high school or dismissed by authorities.
Also, there are three major results caused by a lack motivation and self-esteem are truancy and drop outs, crime, and drug abuse. Truancy and dropping out seem to be one of the main effects that stem from the problem of a lack of motivation and self-esteem.
http://pr.tennessee.edu/news/feb96/dropout.htm

Parents - Kids: Dropout

Many kids dropout and their parents do not know where they are during school hours, when you are 18 you can officially sign your self out of school, but some students just dont come back. Some students resort to dropping out just because they think school is not for them or because their parents didnt finish school so they think that its ok for them to.
There are consequences of leaving can be great, and there many concrete things that schools and families can do to help students stay in school, or get an alternative education, and also meet their personal responsibilities. The main reason why students dropout is because their decisions may be supported by the people closest to them in the belief that they have no choice. These are two major questions that are always asked.Only 41 percent of low-income students entering a four-year college managed to graduate within five years, but 66 percent of high-income students did. Stress is any situation that evokes negative thoughts and feelings in a person, which is one of the reason students dropout and for some students, college is stressful because it is an abrupt change from high school. A measure of distress in college students is the dropout rate, which nationwide figures are difficult to obtain, an estimated 50 percent of entering freshmen do not finish college four years later. National data from the U.S. Census Bureau revealed in 2000 that one in three Americans drops out of college, an overall increase from the 1960s when one in five discontinued his or her studies. College dropouts deserve another chance just like everyone else.

http://www.ericdigests.org/pre-926/stress.htm

http://www.ed.gov/pubs/CollegeForAll/intro.html

Life after dropping out

Dropping out is rarely a snap decision made for one reason alone. Most experts agree that it is a process that often begins with students dropping out mentally. Life after dropping out is difficult. With their lack of education and skills, dropouts are unable to find good, well-paying jobs. They are often concentrated in low-level positions, such as laborers or service workers. Students who usually drop out usually miss out on alot their senior year of high school like, trips prom and graduating with all of their friends. The number of high school students who drop out of high school has been on the decline during the last quarter of the twentieth century. Study has shown that by the late 1970s this trend had changed, and females are now less likely to dropout of high school then are males. Furthermore, there are racial differences in the drop out rate. Hispanics are most likely to dropout of high school, followed by blacks, non-Hispanic whites, and Asians. Every teen has their side of the story to why they did not contine to finish school, and sometimes that problem would be because of personal problem at home which is always the reason.
http://www.bookrags.com/researchtopics/teen-dropouts/04.html

Is GED the answer to dropouts?

Did you know that one-third of those who enter high school don't graduate? This is a question that has been ask for a very long time, and is still questioned today. There has been research done that shows that teens dropout mainly because they have no interest in school, they had poor grades, been suspended, and two of the most important problems why there are a lot of dropouts are because of teen pregnancy and because some are doing time in jail. Dropout rates are about the same for both sexes, but the rates differ for students from different backgrounds. Why blacks and Hispanics dropouts are rates higher than white? Whites compose of two-thirds of the of their total populations and they contributes the greater numbers of dropouts. Research shows also that teens are doing out every nine seconds in America. Some rates are higher for students and students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Back in 1993 the dropout rate was: 7.9 percent for white students, compared to 13.6 percent for black students and 27.5 percent for Hispanic students, and 2.7 percent for students with a high family income level, compared to 23.9 percent for students with a low family income level. As the years go by dropout rates for males and females have been similar, although in earlier year’s dropout rates for males tended to be higher than those for females. Researchers also found out that dropping out is a process not a event, and also found out that most at-risk students do not drop out. Even though teens dropout out at a young age some of them return back to school to recover their education to enhance the way they think, because when you are young you don’t really think that school is an important factor in life but it really is. Without your high school diploma sometimes it is hard to get a job, especially today.

Http://www.focusas.com/Dropouts.html http://www.ed.gov/pubs/ReachingGoals/Goal_2/Dropouts.html
